What matters to me today is service or, more appropriately, being of service.
I have the privilege of serving at a nonprofit, faith-based educational institution. At an event on my first day, one gentleman in particular welcomed me. While others sported professional, pre-printed nametags, his donned — in hand-scrawled bold Sharpie — simply his first name and “Board.” As we spoke, I discovered that coincidentally he is with one of my clients. We shared a laugh over life’s funny coincidences.
Later, the speaker introduced the President of the Board of the Trustees. Onto the stage walked my new acquaintance. I discovered that he didn’t just “work for” but was a founding Principal of my client. I then heard of the incredible history of philanthropy, dedication, generosity, and service that had characterized this gentleman’s entire life.
And just this morning, I was privileged to hear a very different life journey. This man had endured some of the worst life has to offer, frequently self-inflicted. But having overcome addiction and celebrating nearly a decade of sobriety, I heard story after story of others that had been inspired, assisted, and empowered by this man’s willingness to be of service to others in need.
Those of greatest service we are least likely to notice because they don’t do it for attention. They do not crave or seek it, they just serve.
I want to thank all those serving – in whatever capacity. You inspire me, and I pray that I will follow your example.
That’s what matters to me today in 250 words or less. What matters to you? I’d really like to know.
