What matters to me today is another year around the sun, this one like none before.
It’s my birthday. I usually don’t broadcast that, but it has been quite a year. Among other things, my departure from big law to sole practitioner has been a remarkable transition in both comfortably predicted and dramatically unforeseen ways. The encouragement and reception of clients – both preexisting and newly forged – has been gratifying and validating.
But aside from the strictly professional, there has been a meshing of the previously discrete and rigorously compartmentalized components of my life that has been unexpectedly authenticating and invigorating. This year has involved:
painful trials bringing hard-fought triumphs;
gratifying teaching coupled with humbling learning;
unforeseen challenges prompting unknown courage;
welcoming community forging authentic connection;
new inspiration necessitating unprecedented innovation;
devastating wreckage ushering resilient recovery; and
deep personal loss facilitating previously unrecognized abundance.
Above all else, reflecting on the past year, I feel overwhelming gratitude. I am grateful for decades of invaluable experience, connection, and community launching a new transition to opportunity, exploration, and innovation. I am blessed, indeed.
That’s what matters to me today in 250 words or less. What matters to you? I’d really like to know.
